A "typical server" running 24 hours a day for a full year has a total energy usage of approximately 4,000 kWh or emits roughly 3 tons of CO2 per year, according to TrueCloud.1 In relation, an acre of rainforest consumes around 4 tons of CO2 per year.
Carbon neutral hosting is our initiative to reduce the carbon footprint of our services and the web. There are many ways to offset carbon emissions from rainforest conservation to cookstove efficiency.2 We commit to purchase one acre of rainforest per server through the World Land Trust or similar organization.
